Despite facing a hostile environment Bangladesh has been able to secure a place among the emerging economies for its success in several social and economic sectors. If the country continues to retain the pace of growth in its per capita GDP it will transform into a middle income group country by the next decade and a half. Among the sectors that have made contributions, in this regard migrants and their remittances have played important roles. This year remittances constituted 13.68 percent of the GDP, was 3.22 times higher than net income from apparel exports, was 6.4 times of the overseas development assistance and as much as 12.5 times of the foreign direct investment received by the country. In order to keep the development of Bangladesh going, it is very important to establish good governance in the migration sector. In the last decade the successive governments have taken a number of steps in this regard. In this report we are presenting the achievements of and challenges faced by the sector in 2011.
